There are six essential steps to RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION (RTI) best practice:

  1. School-wide Response To Intervention (RTI)) screening: This consists of assessing each student on a broad, easy to administer screening tool to see whether or not a youngster is adept in the areas of critical thinking and behavior skills. This quick assessment identifies children who may be “at risk” for needing more significant intervention in order to succeed in the general curriculum
  2.  Response To Intervention (RTI) involves accurate progress monitoring: These are the data that are gathered to determine the extent to which a child is benefiting from classroom instruction.
  3. Response To Intervention (RTI) tiered service deliver: This involves a PBS model with Universal Strategies, Secondary Strategies for small group interventions, and Tertiary Strategies for individualized intervention which may lead to special education services.
  4. Response To Intervention (RTI) Data-based decision making: Always required, data helps professionals and families communicate information, share options, and clearly understand intervention outcomes.
  5. Response To Intervention (RTI) Parent Involvement: It is critical that parent involvement and communication is not only consistent but organized in a way that is meaningful to all.
  6. Response To Intervention (RTI) Fidelity of implementation: this means that the team can be sure that a given research-based intervention has been used and delivered as it was meant to be.

Response To Intervention (RTI) should NOT be a special education initiative. This process is designed to be implemented at the building level for ALL youngsters in the learning community. It is for ALL children, ALL classrooms, ALL grade levels, and all subject areas. One of the most critical pieces necessary for it to be successful is developing easy and efficient data collection and data management procedures. Without good, easy to understand and analyze, data statements, the process will be compromised.
